After departing from our little hotel in the quiet and agreeable town of Drobeta-Turnu Severin, we head out for the mountains again in the Western Carpathians. Since our next lodging will be in Timisoara, and we are taking a few detours, we are not losing too much time in these mountain roads. Our first “short” stop, is the resort town of Baile Herculane. Known since the Romans time (after they conquered the Dacians), it is located in a small valley, the mountains closely encompassing the town. The multiple springs of thermal-mineral water around the area have contributed to develop this town as a spa destination for centuries. After the Austrians defeated the Ottomans in the war of 1716-1718, the town started to attract people seeking the Romans baths treatment throughout the empire. Even the Austrian empress Elizabeth – known as Sissi – came to Baile Herculane five times. For her the town was “the most beautiful spa resort on the continent”.
Mais, et c’est une réalité à travers le pays, que le 20e siècle avec ses longues années sous un régime communiste ont eu raison de l’état des bâtiments historiques. Certes, on peut encore profiter des eaux thermiques de Baile Herculane dans des hôtels modernes mais le bâtiment iconique “Baia Neptun” est tellement délabré que c’est triste de continuer d’en parler comme une attraction touristique.
Next destination has been featured in a list of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world so since it was really on our route, we couldn’t miss it. It is refreshing site with its waters falling on green moss.
Et après cet arrêt, nous avons conduit tranquillement vers Timișoara en se demandant si un orage n’allait pas nous rattraper.
