On Labour Day weekends (early September), as Canadians, this is usually one weekend that we spent at home or at one’s cottage, for a last BBQ with friends or family to highlight the end of the summer. Being so far away from that kind of setting, we decided to do a quick escapade not too far south from Bucharest, Veliko Tarnovo, in Bulgaria.
On our way to a closer destination, we usually leave early so we can include a few pit stops before reaching out our lodging. I must admit that in general, I found it difficult to plan an itinerary in either Romania or Bulgaria. It’s not that there is no information available just not easy to plan a realistic route for a given area. But also part of the fun of travelling is to do the research.
Sur notre route, nous avions identifié un village qui fut déclaré une réserve architecturale par la Bulgarie dès 1964. Bozhentsi représente bien la période de la Renaissance bulgare quand les Bulgares ont commencé à former une identité nationale par rapport à leurs occupants ottomans. Le nord de la Bulgarie atteindra finalement l’autonomie en 1878.
Le village fut fondé en 1393 suite à la conquête de Veliko Tarnovo par les Ottomans mais son importance architecturale et culturelle sont dues à l’établissement de marchands au milieu du 18e siècle. De l’époque la plus prospère, seulement une centaine de maisons à l’architecture unique de deux ou trois étages sont encore visible.
And with that lovely stop, we moved towards our 2-night stay in Veliko Tarnovo. Stay tuned for the discovery of that ancient capital of Bulgaria and referred as “City of the Tsars”.
